Statement

my work is concerned with exploring the identity and relationship of domestic materials, intertwined with notions of hybridity through painting, sculpture and tapestry. An interest in mark making through drawing allows the artist to manipulate the material physically and visually, playing with the restrictions of depth and flatness created by the surface. The materials are amalgamated through the use of colour, sourced from a combination of the materials original existence and exploration of the subliminal landscape. The sublime influences the use of colour, creating a presence which is felt through the physical nature of the material. Examination of the theory and work of Newman and Kant, along with an understanding of the physical possibilities of the material instigates the power of presence and existence within its course of direction.

The traditional adaptability of materials such as carpet and their presence in occupying a space is explored and is a strong contributor towards encapsulating the viewer. its hybrid stasis unwinds a journey of transformation, adapting to environments like an organism, whilst developing its own sense of existence within a space.
